The Program Today
The focus of Heart Ranch is to provide a safe environment for children to grow and develop character. We do this by partnering one leader, one horse, and one child each session. We believe this personal learning environment helps build up the child in all areas of life; physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. We recognize each child is unique and we at the ranch work to help with each individual's needs. We do all of this for every child…free of charge.
Heart Ranch has made its program known and available to a variety of organizations on Hawaii Island since starting up in 2012. These organizations include; Hawaii Island Social Worker Association, Lili'uokalani Trust, The Institute For Family Enrichment (TIFFE), Hawaii Behavioral Health, Hawaii Easter Seals, the Hawaii Department of Human Services – Child Welfare Services, Bayada Home Health Care Hawaii, Hale Kipa, Hope Inc., and Hilo Missionary Church, as well as a variety of independent mental health therapists in the community. We have worked with individuals from all of the aforementioned organizations. As of Jan 2020, we have tracked more than 500 individuals that have either been through the program or are currently on the list of waiting participants. The list is growing larger each day. This does not count the numerous parents, siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents that have visited the ranch for an event or a participants scheduled session.
In 2017 we started a program for Veterans with PTSD. We are using a method of EAP and EAL (Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Equine Assisted Learning) for the Veterans program along with reaching out to a number of Foster kids and troubled teen groups. We are contstantly changing to benefit and support our local community.
